To a runner like me, the Hoyts epitomize everthing the marathon

stands for: tenacity, determination, overcoming obstacles, stubborness,

guts, and especially humanitariamism.  They're pinnacles of inspiration

to runners and non-runners alike, proving to millions of people that you

can do anything you set your mind to, no matter what the percieved

impediments may be.  And after thirty-one trips from Hopkinton to

Copley Square, Team Hoyt is as much a symbol of the Boston Marathon

as the Unicorn engraved on the finisher's medal.

The first time I saw Team Hoyt, they were on a billboard in

LaGuardia airport, with the caption "Inspiration....Pass it on."  They did.

Just seeing that sign made me want to start doing laps around the

departure lounge.  I did some research, saw some videos, and was blown

away by their story.  It was a banner moment when I got to meet Dick

Hoyt in Boston and shake his hand.  It was even cooler to run next to

Dick and Rick for a few moments the next day during the Marathon.

It was like meeting Batman and Robin and then getting to help them

fight crime.

Now, speaking as a pragmatic fund-raiser, Team Hoyt and the Hoyt Foundation support programs in Boston and elsewhere that assist physically and mentally disabled people to live healthy, active, and rewarding lives.  They partner with numerous orginizations - from Easter Seals to Children's Hospital Boston - to widen the scope of life for people with disablilites.  The Hoyts, working with Tufts University, pioneered the development of a device that would allow Rick, and eventually many others, to communicate via computer.  Dick and Rick raise awareness for their cause by competing in marathons (over 70), triathlons (247 to date), and other races (more than 1077).  They also promote their work with speaking engagements for business groups, schools, athletic teams, and other orginizations, bringing their "Yes you can!" philosophy to both able-bodied and disabled people across the country.

If you're still not convinced, go to the Team Hoyt website Here and see for yourself.
